The CBC Blogging Manifesto
Preamble:
If you blog about the CBC, it's assumed that you are doing so out of love and perhaps frustration.
It's only natural. The CBC is a wonderful institution with a long, proud history, going through an interesting and difficult time. By blogging about the CBC your colleagues, senior management, and the public will all be enriched by your expert opinion. Your insight, experience, and will will only help the world at large better understand a corporation that at times appears stodgy, arrogant, and faceless.
For better or for worse, you are representing the CBC when you blog about it. Keep this in mind with every word.

- Use common sense and don't do anything stupid. Blog to make the CBC better, not to kill it.
There are plenty of others who want to do that for us. - Ad hominem attacks should be avoided but disagreeing is expected.
- Be brave.
Be honest and tell it straight. Talk about new ideas and revive some old ones. Don't be afraid to challenge the “experts,” and certainly not the anonymous ones. - Use audio, video and images fearlessly, but responsibly.
Use judgment if asked to take it down. - Acknowledge and link to your sources.
If it is a rumour, say so. If your co-worker says something you'd like blog, ask them first. If it was another website, link to it. Do your research. Be fair. Get it right. And change it if it is wrong. - Blog wherever and whenever you want, but don’t let it detract from your job.
- Eschew advertising.
Plugging the CBC, yourself, and your work is cool. Banner ads are tacky. - During the next strike or lockout, you may feel urged to ignore any or all of these guidelines. Do so at your own risk, knowing that your words can harm yourself, others, and the CBC itself.

Blogged!
I don't follow any rules.
Good luck!
3. Be brave.

Big words for someone who posts annonymously.
You'll notice that there are nine contributors to this manifesto, and only one is anonymous.
One contributor is anonymous and another is pseudonymous. (Ouimet is habitually misdescribed as “anonymous.” CBC Worker Bee isn’t really a pseudonym, though, is it?)
Anyway, H. Manatee, of course an “anonymous” blogger is in a position to advocate challenging anonymous bloggers. (The line item, however, needs to be rewritten: Don’t be afraid to challenge the “experts,” and be afraid least of all to challenge the anonymous ones.)
Touche, y'all. But I'm not the one coming across like my stupid little "manifesto" is the Declaration of Independence. Have fun with it...
They are having fun with it, hence the vainglorious and bombastic title.
Just visiting from the land of Unclear on the Concept, Manatee?
Yes, there's supposed to be fun involved. We would have explicitly stated as much, but we hold that truth to be self-evident.
who are these self-appointed troublemakers?
hungry for power and mischief
isn't Ouimet simply a coward who likes to control things while wearing a mask?
and what is Justin Beach's claim to fame?
and who are the other losers?
I don't know, I haven't noticed any losers around here.
They need to wait for someone else to “appoint” them if they want to cause trouble?
Would CBC-sanctioned blogging have constituted “appoint[ment]”? Its continued absence was what brought the Manifesto™ to life. If they hadn’t “appointed” themselves, it would never have been written.
Ok, who appointed Allan? - It would seem to me that with that hypocritical statement that, if we are guilty of anything, then he shares that guilt.
Joe, did you miss basic civics in high school? The position of CBC Troublemaker is appointed by the Governor in Council for a term of three years, subject to review by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Disruption, Mischief and Ruckus.
Self-appointed troublemakers are just muddying the waters and making, well, trouble for the official troublemakers, whose job is difficult enough as it is trying to sneak tacks onto Ian Hanomansing's chair just before "Canada Now".
And the thing I forgot to say: congratulations on a terrific, common-sense approach to a staff blogging policy. Here's hoping it gets picked up.
Allen: Be careful. You may have just accused Ouimet of being a superhero. Next thing you know, we'll actually be having sightings of him/her/hir in mask(but no capes! They're a safety hazard for everyone but Superman and the Batman!) and body armour.
Ouimet may even find they've been appointed by Marvel Comics as the new lead character in their planned successor-title to Alpha Flight! :-D
Ouimet won't let me speak on her phony blog
Can't handle it.
Others seem unafraid of my words, and readily respond.
No one can accuse them of lacking integrity and courage.
Their actions speak loud and clear.
I'm guessing that Jason is the web expert here.
Otherwise I fail to see his qualifications for being involved with CBC'ers any more than me.
OOPS did I say something that's going to get me censored?
Now that the big excitement is over and you've all gone back to your routines, I'll likely just be talking to myself here.
Hmmmm
what to say what to say
I can't call anybody a jerk here.
I can't make sexual references.
So what am I left with?
Oh yeah ...
Canada is a great country, and the management of CBC is really bad.
Hugh manatee hit it succintly above, but he still seems to have resorted to a name that's suspect.
Seems the virus is spreading.
Even people with honest opinions are afraid to use their real name around this group.
No doubt they relish the fear they've engendered in others.
Can you imagine how well Ouimet would treat me at the CBC?
Would she endorse my promotion, or do something else?
A lot of people might feel betrayed if her real name gets out.
"Don't be afraid to challenge the “experts,” and certainly not the anonymous ones."
Because they're not afraid of you. Like Ouimet, they'll just prevent you from challenging them.
What a bunch of hypocrites.
Those of you who signed this document are worst kind of citizens this country could have.
Instead of standing up for freedom of speech, you tell people they must wear a disguise if they really want to be heard.
That you have to be sneaky if you really want results.
And what results have any of you had?
Zero.
Ouimet uses a phony name so that she can tell you about bicycle theives around the building. Why?
How is it that someone can take a respected name like Alphonse's and use it for their own perverse purposes?
What good have any of you accomplished at the CBC, other than your jobs that you were paid for?
And now you want to start up some mischief - hoping that some idiot will publish something more useful than any of you have done to date.
Because you've accomplished nothing in the way of real job action so far, and this new call to arms is a reflection of your failure.
Why no mention anywhere of your ineffectual union?
Why are you not proposing that everyone go through normal channels to voice their concerns?
Who the hell needs more blogs about the CBC? Aren't the current ones good enough. Apparently not.
One question:
Do not the rules of a civilized society dictate that you identify yourself when dealing with the public?
the manifesto says that it's ok to spread rumours about and within the CBC.
Was this intentional, or an oversight?
feels like being in a vacuum
all I hear is the echo of my own voice
oh well
I guess I'm the only one who cares about this manifesto/job action
it's so lonely here
could the rest of the country be yawning over this latest stunt by a small group of ego-trippers?
a wierd group of people
you'll notice that they don't answer questions directly
and they just ignore the contradictions
which explains why their idea seems to have gone over like lead baloon
But they did manage to bring attention to themselves as arbiters of how other people should behave.
how is Justin Beach relevant to this group?
what's his affiliation with the CBC that his signature should be there as if he were a staff member?
What's been his contribution to the CBC that we should pay attention to his remarks
are there no standards as to who was involved?
does an outsider have any business dictating CBC employee behaviour?
AZ says at the top that she doesn't follow any rules.
Must be some kind of inside joke, or could it be sarcasm because she follows too many rules?
is Ouimet in a personnel function?
or someone in a labour dispute or ombudsman role
people are sure afraid to disagree with anything he does
and she's not especially worried about losing her job
and has even said that if discovered he thinks the company will just tell him to stop
i think he's setting a horrible example to others to follow suit who don't have the resources or protective network to save them
and this group is taking no responsibilty or promising to help if something goes wrong
Justin once asserted that a blog is private property
do you agree with him?
wow
when it comes to people who care about this particular blog
I appear to be the last of a dying breed
it's bit like solitary confinement
guess Justin or Ouimet will be checking in on me every few days
they seem to have run out of answers
joe clark turns out to be a real name
and a real website
and he thinks it's cool to blog anonymously
there are those people around who have no problem with it, as long as it's not them or one of their friends that gets hurt
One of the worst aspects about the manifesto is that it states that it's OK to spread rumours, as long as you "say so".
But by then, the damage is done.
How can any organization approve of spreading rumours in the workplace?
Going a little too fast to get their moment of fame.
Azerb's blog seems to be one of those rare places where you can actually enjoy free speech.
Several of the blogs I visited will try to manipulate your remarks, editing out any remarks that put you in a good light while leaving up others that appear inflammatory.
Or just not allowing you to respond at all.
Or calling in friends to gang up on you to make it seem like your opinion is in the minority.
And not all readers are sophisticated enough to see through the editing and manipulation.
So what do you think all of this amounts to?
Why is a small group of people, including outsiders, calling on employees to start publishing about the CBC?
Now that their idea of playing new-age revolutionaries has bombed, what will this group try next?
As evidenced by the echo in this space, I'm the only one who cares.
It is incredibly arrogant for these characters to try and tell people what they can and cannot say.
That arrogance alone is no doubt what sunk the whole idea.
Why on earth would a worker go home and blog, unless it's promote an agenda they can afeect in the workplace.
The group wants you to do all the work while they reap the "rewards" of mischief.
when I contacted Tod, one of the "contributors", about the rumour issue, he tried to distance himself as much as possible:
"You’re mistaken. I have not endorsed the bloggers’ manifesto. I reported its existence, but I’d challenge you to find any text of mine saying I “signed” it in some way"
How many other "contributors are now trying to avoid responsiblity for their actions÷
One of the contributors is apparently a middle manager.
Could anything be more of an indictment against the CBC than a manger who is to afraid to use their real name when speaking out?
Allan/Amazing,
Can you please stop spamming TeaMakers with comments? With every other blog, you seemed to have understood that comments about this manifesto should go in a "manifesto" post.
Except for Teamakers. You seem to think they fit in a "Street Cents" post.
Better yet, start your own blog. I'm serious about this. That's the ultimate in free speech.
And remember these days?
You used to be coherent. What happened?
Of course I'll lighten up. I respond favorably to civility.
But I'm not finished with this issue.
Particularly if the Drone resurfaces.I stand by whatever I said last year and this. There are may redeeming aspects to the efforts made by bloggers, and I gladly acknowledge and encourage them, but the ones who are abusing their power of the printed word need to be confronted rather than ignored.
It's interesting you bring up the Drone, because in many ways he was the start of all this.
His blog was obviously not my cup of tea - I used to tease him all the time. But a lot of people read it. Personally I felt it was boring. And he was wrong about a lot of things. I think he did that on purpose.
In his mind, the lockout was "war" and that justified everything he wrote.
So #8 is the "Drone Clause," I suppose.
As for being arrogant, maybe you're right? But you were there last year when I was trying to work this out. You were asking the same questions, even back then. We're still trying to find the answers. Read the link, it's all there.
So what's wrong with forcing the issue a little bit?
And I don't even know what a "job action" is. Seriously.
that was the strangest comment thread I have ever read. are you OK, allan?
I'm fine. A good ride, and there's evidence of something worthwhile coming out of it. Otherwise it would have been a sadder experience.
I suppose I think the Internet belongs to me, as some think the CBC belongs to them.
There are many more issues not addressed, not even at Wikipedia.
For example, there are blogs and there are blogs.
It's easy to fail to take notice of the trademark logo that precedes the URL on a page that declares itself a blog, but that logo indicates where accountability lies, and whose interests are predominant.
The Blogger.com site bestows equal rights and greater impartiality, one more thrilling freedom within all this on-line nonsense that may ultimately save civilization from itself.
When a computer teacher asked our group "what's the one word that comes to mind when I say the Internet?" I said "fascinating."
The answer he was looking for was - publishing.
(Grrrrr. I hate questions like that. What am I, a mind reader?)
The lockout was an emotionally charged couple of months.
Public sympathy was less than overwhelming. Many people took the view that strikes and lockouts are the risk one takes for enjoying a higher standard of employment and benefits. So what's to feel sorry for? And it may have bruised some egos that viewers could survive without their creations.
But some bloggers went too far, and brought disgrace upon themselves, and by association, upon the CBC. And that got my attention.
I still remember one employee up North who subsequently stated her regret and shame at what she had said about others.
When time and opportunity allows, I'll do what I can to have an impact on anything that smacks of the likes of the Cbc Drone, before I creep myself out too much. I'm in a better position to do so because I don't work for the CBC. I answer to a higher power - this potato chip that looks like Leonard Cohen.
What is the CBC?
Wait, now I get it. "Hugh Manatee" = "Humanity". Does this blog have anystuff about the CBC?
